BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The Afghan National Army celebrated the graduation of 46 engineers at the Humanitarian De-Mining Course graduation ceremony April 24.
The graduates, who have achieved a Level 4 U.N.- recognized humanitarian de-mining qualification, trained for 10 weeks in both the classroom and in the field, clearing minefields and explosives.
The Mine Action Center here, led by Maj. Alexander Thomson, facilitated the course. The tasks they learned included an introduction to planning and surveying of minefields and contaminated areas, establishing clearance sites, the use of clearance tools and actions to be taken on finding mines or explosive ordnance.
Among the distinguished guests present at the graduation were the Afghan National Army Chief of (tactical) Engineers, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Shafi Baheer, Task Force Rugged Commander, Col. Richard Stevens, TF Rugged Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Frank Busch and many U.N. officials.
"It is our job to help our country," said the Afghan Company Commander, Capt. Shah Sultan.
Stevens thanked the Afghan soldiers for dedicating themselves to such a noble cause, "With your help and by completing this training, Afghanistan will achieve its goal of becoming forever free of the threat of mines and unexploded ordnance."
The Afghan soldiers will be employed in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance of war throughout Afghanistan in three de-mining teams of the 207th and 209th Corps of the Afghan National Army. Their likely tasks will include clearing old fighting positions, local roads and paths, and villages and farmland throughout Afghanistan.
